To work out an MYP maths grade, add the four criterion levels (each 0–8) for a total out of 32, then convert the total with the IB’s grade boundaries. For example, levels of 7, 5, 6 and 6 make 24, which is a grade 6.
How to use the calculator
- Find your child’s final level for each criterion on their report. These are the numbers from 0 to 8 next to A, B, C and D.
- Select each level above. The total and grade update straight away.
- Read the suggestion under the grade to see how many more levels would reach the next grade.
The MYP grade boundaries
| MYP grade | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Criteria total | 1–5 | 6–9 | 10–14 | 15–18 | 19–23 | 24–27 | 28–32 |
Common questions
How is an MYP maths grade calculated?
Teachers give a level from 0 to 8 for each of the four criteria (A, B, C and D). The four levels are added for a total out of 32, which is converted to a final grade from 1 to 7 using the IB’s grade boundaries: 1–5 is a 1, 6–9 a 2, 10–14 a 3, 15–18 a 4, 19–23 a 5, 24–27 a 6 and 28–32 a 7.
Is the final level for each criterion an average of my child’s tasks?
No. Teachers make a “best-fit” judgement for each criterion, looking at the pattern of your child’s work and giving more weight to their most consistent recent achievement. That is why this calculator asks for the final level, not the level on a single task.
Why is my child’s report grade different from this calculator?
Schools report progress in different ways during the year, and some use their own boundaries for internal reports. Always check your school’s assessment policy.
What MYP grade is needed for DP maths?
Each school sets its own entry requirements for DP courses. Many ask for a secure grade in MYP maths, and some ask for Extended mathematics before Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. Ask your school’s DP coordinator.
